The Eruv permits carrying
for items that are allowed
to be used on Shabbos.
Therefore an umbrella, which
is not allowed to be used on
Shabbos due to it's creating
an Ohel, (tent) cannot be
carried. This Halacha
applies to any item that one
cannot use on Shabbos. If
one has even food that for
some reason cannot be used
on Shabbos, i.e. a can that
cannot be opened, something
with writing on it that
cannot be removed
etc.Putting trash out for
pickup later in the week
would be a problem of
handling Muktze as well as
Hachana (preparation for the
week) and is not allowed.

One is not allowed to carry
in an area with a kosher
Eruv items that would be
needed for after Shabbos, as
this would be a violation of
Hachana, preparing from
Shabbos to a weekday.. This
would include carrying keys
with a car key on Shabbos to
Shul, which in any case
would be Muktze, as well as
excess of an item not needed
for Shabbos. Therefore a
person can take on Shabbos
the amount of Pampers that
may be needed for their
child, but not an excessive
amount, as this would be
carrying without Shabbos
need. A person can carry to
Shul their Siddur etc. but
not an abundance of Sefarim
not needed for Shabbos.

The purpose of an
Eruv is to bind a community
together when the Halacha
permits to enhance one's
Shabbos. This was very
necessary often to obtain
well water from the town
center as well as to carry
one's Cholent that was
placed in the bakers oven Erev Shabbos on Shabbos to
each persons home. The
Mishna Brura cautions us
that even a kosher Eruv is
only allowed to be used when
it is needed for Shabbos.
Having a kosher Eruv is a
blessing for the community
when used appropriately.
